Why Freelance and the Reasons I Didn’t

Freelance gives you the flexibility to do what you like, when you like and get paid for it. When you are particularly skilled and passionate about an area you can freelance you are more apt to be able to make a living doing what you love most. Is there any reason why freelance is not something you do?

I must, and sadly, admit that my number one reason for not becoming a freelancer was the same reason I never filled out a job application.

Sure I worked when I was young…most jobs were those where I knew some that knew the boss so the job was a given, no application needed just show up to work.

This was great I just got right down to business no application needed that may take days or weeks and no, “Sorry but you did not get the job.”

Fear of rejection was my biggest downfall. I dreaded the idea of filling out job applications only to find out in the application, I fell short in some area of expertise. I have felt the same way about freelance sites.

This is no excuse for not giving freelance a fair shot. I am a hard worker and I strive for excellence and in one instance at one of my jobs I made myself indispensable by creating a job description that the boss did not know they needed. So what kept me from going forward?

The area of being confident made me doubt my expertise. Yes, I have expertise some of which I knew little about. You have expertise in areas you may not realize. Your experiences can offer great value to others around you.

It is important to number one, get over your fear and go forward. If it is experience you need then think outside the box and get some under your belt. Find ways you can gain the experience you need to show yourself that you can and you will!

In my next post I will show you just what I did to do both and got past my fear and got the experience that I needed to unleash a passion and an expertise I have that other desperately want today.

Share your insights and what you have learned about freelancing or getting that job position you wanted or perhaps you still struggle let it out on the comments below and commit to go forward on a more positive note…
